Edwin Hayes - 'Penarth : Entrance to Cardiff Harbour' - Another lovely painting from Edwin Hayes, R.I. framed from one of his favourite locations being a copy of a print held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] [20180227]

The enlargement above shows St. Augustine's church tower in the course of erection given that there appears to be scaffolding surrounding the tower and that it incomplete! Hence, we can date this painting to 1865 or 1866 by which time the original mediaeval church, which was previously large enough to serve the rural community of Penarth, had become too small for the rapid growth in population of the town having been spurred on by the opening of the Penarth Dock during 1865. The Friends of St Augustine's website states that the saddle-back shape of the tower of the old church was retained as it is a land mark for shipping.

Edwin Hayes - (1820–1904) - 'Penarth from Cardiff' - An oil on canvas on blustery day. That lighthouse features again as does the Penarth Head with St. Augustine's church tower. A great day for sailing but not too good for being in a rowing boat! Edwin was a prolific maritime artist having gained a reputation for producing dramatic scenes of sail in rough waters.
