Samuel Hieronymus Grimm [1773-1794] - Flat Holm - An ink wash on paper view of Flat Holm in the Bristol Channel dated 1783 held within the British Library. [921] [Shelfmark: Additional MS 15547; Item number: f.38] [20210127]
Grimm copied this east view of Flat Holm Island and its lighthouse in the Bristol Channel from an original by Julius Ibbetson. The island is home to a large gull population and today is a site of Special Scientific Interest and a Local Nature Reserve. There is also an old cholera isolation hospital there.
The artist Samuel Hieronymus Grimm was Swiss by birth. Grimm settled in England in 1768 and made his living by accompanying wealthy patrons on their travels around the country.
