John Bourne (1861-1935) - A Paddle Steamer Entering Tiger Bay - A lovely view looking west and clearly indicating 'The Cut' leading to the Pier Head and the Bute Docks at Cardiff. [000] [002]

In the background is Penarth Head with the mariners landmark of St. Augustine's church tower clearly visible. On the left, the lighthouse, (which had a fixed white navigation light!) the old station and pier is clear. The date of the painting is not known but is probably late 1890's.

I am unable to positively identify the paddle steamer but she looks similar to p.s. 'Velindre' of the Cardiff Steam Navigation Company. She ended her service during 1896 and met her fate at the scrap yard the following year.

John Bourne hailed from Birkenhead and at one time was a Chief Officer aboard a variety of Port of Liverpool based vessels. His artwork includes numerous trawlers, steam drifters and other vessels at sea, however, the view from Cardiff seems to be unique in his studies. Maybe, he had a day off when visiting the port and decided to set up his easel at the pier head on this typical stormy day! Corrections, as always, very welcome!
