Alfred Sisley (1839-1899) - The Cliff of Penarth (La falaise de Penarth) - 1897.

Alfred Sisley (1839-1899) - The Cliff of Penarth (La falaise de Penarth) - 1897 - Another of the paintings which Alfred Sisley painted from the clifftop path between Penarth and Lavernock, where only a few months previously Marconi had transmitted the world’s first radio signal across water to Flat Holm.

Alfred Sisley (1839-1899)

Alfred together with his wife, Eugénie Lescouezec, lodged in Penarth with a coal merchant with the surname Thomas - the same maiden name as my wife, Julie - Aghh! did they stay with my Mother-in-Law? However, the cause of death was cancer and Alfred departed only a few years later in 1899. Sadly, he died shortly after she did.

In a letter Alfred wrote : ‘The countryside is pretty and the Roads, with the big ships sailing in and out of Cardiff, is superb’ – but also commented that the bed was uncomfortable and the weather too hot!

During March 2023 the painting was sold for £302,400 at Christies of London. [000] [002]
