Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .

Volume Eight - Pre-Victorian to the present day - more aspects - Passat & Pamir at Penarth Dock - A Photo Album - 1948 - 1951

Pamir' - 'Break of Bridge Deck from the Mizzen
'Pamir' - ''Break of Bridge Deck from the Mizzen' In a heavy sea the gangway provides a safer passage than at deck level. Three lifeboats are clear on their davits which I believe is the total complement. [001]

'Pamir' - lifeboat

'Pamir' - A photo taken of the lifeboat which is shown in the book 'the Last Time Around Cape Horn' by William Stark an account of his voyage during 1949. William comments about the loss of the 'Pamir' in an Atlantic hurricane on the 21st September 1957:-

'When the rescue ships arrived where the Pamir had gone down they found only this lifeboat and six survivors'. [335]

Eighty souls were lost. The construction of the boat is different to that in the upper image so I can only conclude that the lifeboats were upgraded during the refit of the 'Pamir' at Kiel. In the spring of 1950 Pamir and Passat, along with Moshulu and Carl Vinnen were bought by a German consortium headed by shipowner Heinz Schliewen to be used as cargo-carrying sail-training ships. However, only Pamir and Passat ever returned to sea.
