Another look at the 'Mission to Seamen' which by 1950 was no longer in use. St. Augustine's church has a memorial tablet which states:-
'In memory of Commander Walter Murray Pengelley, of her Majesty's late Indian Navy, for 24 years dockmaster at Penarth, who died December 29th, 1897. He was for many years honorary secretary of the Penarth branch Mission to Seamen, and by his influence the church and institute connected with this mission were erected in 1878 at Penarth Dock.'
To the left of the image is the entrance to the subway under the River Ely which opened in 1900. The 'stepped' structure at the rear of the building is the top cover of the tunnel as it disappears down, down, deeper and down under the river only to reappear at the end of Ferry Road as if by magic!
