Swingbridge at Penarth Dock
A colourised enlargement of the upper image highlighting the swing bridge between the dock and the basin locks. The lock gates appear to have been removed by this date. There seem to be very few images of this swing bridge but it is indicated on a variety of maps and plans of the dock. When or where it was made is unknown but I recall that it was removed when the dock was isolated from the basin in 1962 or early 1963. A muddy track across the new dam was used as a replacement but somehow it never had the same appeal as the original swing bridge for me! The Quonson huts are a leftover from the use of the dock as an American base during WWII but these were subsequently utilised by local businesses as storerooms and workshops. [001]
