'Passat' - Penarth Dock 1950' - Two lovely views (plus colourised versions) from my amazing photo album. The port anchor is 'catted' and 'fished' but the starboard anchor 'catenary chain' is witness that the anchor has been let go. [001]
The novelist Alexander Fullerton described the weighing of an anchor:-
'The cable comes clanking in with regular metallic crashes as each iron link bangs out of the hawse hole, followed by the cry from the fo'c'sle 'Cable's up and down!' This signifies that all the slack of the cable has been dragged inboard, the cable is now vertical so that the next few turns of the capstan will break the anchor out of the sea bed. The command 'Weigh' follows and the clanking starts up again. Finally, the response 'Anchors aweigh!' followed by 'Clear anchor!' meaning that the anchor can now be seen, free of cable or wire fouling it.' [340]
