Volume Eight - Pre-Victorian to the present day - more aspects - The White Funnel Fleet - P & A Campbell Limited

'Glen Rosa'
The paddle steamer 'Glen Rosa' photographed in the River Avon approaching Bristol around 1897. The bridge was situated amidships, just behind the funnel. I could imagine that the helmsman was often using the corner of his handkerchief to remove lumps of smut from his eyes whilst thinking whoever designed this one had a sense of humour! She was built in 1877 by Cairds at Greenock and had a number of owners until being purchased by Captain Alex. Campbell in October 1897 and taken over by P. & A. Campbell Ltd. in May 1898. [154]

Paddle Steamers in the Avon Gorge - P.S. Glen Rosa followed by P.S. Barry - Whitsun 1911 - (photo courtesy Capt. Thomas). A Pamlin Prints postcard held in the Penarth Dock Collection of the P & A Campbell 'Glen Rosa' being tailed by the 'Barry' of the competition, however, in the same year of 1911, 'Barry' was acquired by Campbells and renamed 'Waverley'. She gave 30 years service to them complete with white funnel. I must admit, however, it looks like she is still regaled in the red funnel livery of the Barry Railway Company! [001] [549] [20170717]

P.S. 'Glen Rosa'
P.S. 'Glen Rosa' - Grahame Farr in his amazing history of 'West Country Passenger Steamers' [154] says that 'The last of the Campbell fleet to be taken over (by the Admiralty) were the 'Waverley' and 'Glen Rosa', which left Bristol on 30 May, 1917. After fitting out as mine-sweepers, they were stationed at Swansea and swept for mines at the entrance to the Bristol Channel. Later they went to the Thames for duty.' The postcard is an acquisition for my Penarth Dock Collection. [001] [20170831]

p.s.s."Glen Rosa" - A fine postcard view published in London by E. A. Schwerdtfeger & Company but printed in Berlin around the turn of the century. - The postcard is held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

In December 1909 Schwerdtfeger & Company registered 'EAS' enclosed within a heart shape as a trademark which led to a dispute in 1912 with the Hart Publishing Company Limited. James Barnes, (who's name appears as a publisher on a number of postcards on this website) a wholesale trader in picture post-cards, stated, that he sold to dealers. He had dealt in the Plaintiffs' cards; they were known as the "E.A.S." cards. The Defendants' cards were known as the" Hart" cards. There has been no evidence to show that the public pay any attention to the marks, but, on the contrary, there is evidence showing that the public pay no attention to the marks. There is no evidence upon which it could be held that there has been any infringement of the Plaintiffs' Trade Mark. The Court case was dismissed with costs.
