'Sprayville' off Penarth Head
'Sprayville'
Another image (with colourised enlargement) of the past from the Penarth Dock Collection of the vessel. 'Sprayville' sailing past Penarth Head sometime, probably, in the early 1950's. She was built at the yard of Cochrane & Sons at Selby, in the former East Riding of Yorkshire during 1920. She was 152' - 0" length x 25' - 2" breath x 10' - 8" depth, of 466 gross register tons and christened the 'Pickmere' for the Northwich Carrying Co., of Liverpool. 1931 found her under new ownership having been purchased by John S. Monks Limited and renamed 'Sprayville'. In 1940 she was requisitioned by the Royal Navy for use as a cable laying ship for the Admiralty Cable Service as the 'H.M.S. Sprayville'. She was fitted with cable equipment to enable her to fulfil her war service. At the end of hostilities in 1945, she was returned to Monks to resume service as a freighter. She arrived at Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria in June 1958 and sadly didn't leave intact after coming under the shipbreakers' influence. [001]
