Barry Dock - General View
Barry Dock - General View
'Barry Dock - General View' - A postcard from the Wrench Series addressed to Cyclist C. R. Bugler of C Company, 1st V. B. Dorest Regiment, Swanage, Dorset and stamped March 1902. The extent of the town of Barry may be seen in this view. I believe that the tall tower in the left skyline of the photo is the new Fire Station situated in Court Road which had opened in 1901. The town brigade were a band of volunteers formed in 1899 and the fire engine at this date was horse-drawn, it being another twelve years before the town acquired its first motor vehicle fire engine. Subway Road & General Offices, Barry Dock
'Subway Road & General Offices, Barry Dock' - It's just after five past two o'clock in the afternoon according to the dock offices clock and numerous workers, some with suitcases are walking to the docks. This postcard was published by A. Peterson Stores, Subway Road, Barry Dock in 1930. The former main line of the Barry Railway passes above the arched bridge at the top of the road. I love the tall chimney on the left and the rickety postbox opposite. I used to call at a cafe a few doors up when I worked at Hodges Engineering where they made a very tasty fried egg sandwich - maybe it was contributory factor for my need for heart bypass surgery half a century later! Another from the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

'Barry Docks and Railway Office'
'Barry Docks and Railway Office' - Another view of the offices with its distinctive clock tower which could be seen all over the docks and town. As a youth I had a great friend and mentor, Mr. Islyn Williams who lived in Barry and worked at the offices; in his spare time and was the conductor of the Barry Brass Band. I used to travel with him in his blue Morris Minor car to concerts and on Saturday mornings to the youth band rehearsal at Rhydyfelin, just a few miles south of Pontypridd. [001]
