The Entrance Barry Dock

The Entrance Barry Dock - A postcard slightly the worse for its age. It was postmarked Pontadulais, Swansea, Glam. on 2nd December 1935 and addressed to Mrs. Cyril Thomas of Llanelly. Wives weren't allowed to use their own Christian names in those faraway days, they had to use the name of their husband! A single funnel P & A Campbell, White Funnel Fleet paddle steamer (probably 'Glen Usk') is going astern as she departs the pontoon landing stage and heads back out into the Bristol Channel. Steep Holm can be seen on the horizon and left is the sister island of Flat Holm. Another from the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

Whitmore Bay, Barry Island - c.1905

Whitmore Bay, Barry Island - A view of the sandy crescent bay with children posing at the waterside. The postmark is August 1905 and the promenade is not yet developed. There used to be a children's paddling pool nearby this location where I often paddled as a child. [001]

A Google Earth map shows the proximity of Whitmore Bay to the Harbour and Entrance to Barry Docks.
A Google Earth map shows the proximity of Whitmore Bay to the Harbour and Entrance to Barry Docks. The headland between was the site of the former Butlin's Holiday Camp. I used to break in through the steel fence to meet a rather lovely Red Coat and party with her and her friends until the early hours - that is until security collared me one night and were less than polite. I believe they call it assault these days! - But those were Happy Days!! [110]
