Queen's Street, Cardiff

Queen's Street, Cardiff - A Valentine's Series postcard postdated July 1914. Lizzy writes to Miss Sarah Ann Holmes, a weaver at Merralls Mill, Oxenhope, Near Keighley, saying that the weather in Cardiff is fine and she will at work a week next Thursday. She was obviously spending her Wakes Weeks holiday in the Cardiff area.

The Merrall textile family business commenced in the early part of the 19th century by Mr. Hartley Merrall and eventually his sons ran the manufacturing business which became known as Merrall Brothers. They had a number of mills locally and the Lees Syke Mill, a worsted mill known as Merrall's Mill, was destroyed by fire in 1965. Oxenhope is only a few miles from our home here in northern Halifax in the former West Riding of Yorkshire - once home to the extensive wool and worsted industry. Another from the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

Queen's Street, Cardiff

Queen's Street, Cardiff - an enlargement to confirm that its always informative to look above street level for signs of life as it was! On the left is the sign 'Morgan - Painless Dentistry' and on the right is an even larger sign which says 'New Teeth'! A sign below identifies the company as Templar Malin. Simply wonderful!! [001]

A newspaper advertisement of 1909 states;- 'Templar Malins' New Teeth - Never change colour and never wear out. The best are guaranteed for five years but will last a life-time'. Their address is 51 Queen-street, Cardiff and they are open Ten till Eight Daily. Also at Merthyr, Port Talbot and Swansea.

Cardiff, St. Mary's Street - A Happy New Year
Cardiff, St. Mary's Street - A Happy New Year - It is a Raphael Tuck & Sons 'Oilette' postcard posted on Christmas Day 1906 (Yes, the post office worked on Christmas Day in those days!) It states that:- 'St. Mary's Street. Here is the chief thoroughfare in the town, where the statue of the former Marquis of Bute presides over the starting place for trams and omnibuses. It is a broad and handsome street with fine houses, and several large arcades branch off from it.' [001]

Castle Street, Cardiff
Castle Street, Cardiff - Another Valentine's series postcard from the Penarth Dock Collection featuring the clocktower of Cardiff Castle looking back toward Queen Street in the distance. The Angel Hotel is at the near right of the photograph and a drayman delivers his ales by horse and cart in the direction of the river Taff crossing. The postcard was franked in April 1905. [001]
