Penarth from the Sea

Penarth from the Sea - A lovely watercolour by Stanley T. Chaplin dated 1936 was the subject of a postcard from the same era. The building with the timbered gables is Beachcliffe. It was built in 1904 by Frederick Speed of Shepton Mallet and was developed with private hotels and the Gwalia cafe and Govier restaurant. I used to get an ice-cream or knickerbocker glory at Mr. Rabiotti's cafe and Julie and her Dad used to have tea and toast there together before Julie started her day at the Penarth Dock Engineering works. Penarth from the Sea

Penarth from the Sea - A lovely postcard from the Penarth Dock Collection franked September 1946 and to an address in Rose Valley, Near Pembroke. Mary writes: 'Aunty and I are having a lovely time, just going into Cardiff for the afternoon. The weather is not too nice today, but there is always plenty to do.' [001]

The Front from Pier, Penarth
The Front from Pier, Penarth - A Valentine's Series postcard from the 1940's or early 1950's I'd guess. The buildings of the Esplanade are resplendent especially the Beachcliffe building. Frederick Speed had a previous record of construction in Penarth having built the Landsdowne Hotel opposite Penarth station and the British Legion building in the corner of the Station Approach. Beachcliffe was completed in 1904 somewhat delayed by the contractors having to resort to removal of the cliffs with dynamite to create space for the structure. [001] [107]
