Pier & Esplanade - Penarth

Pier & Esplanade - Penarth - The first of two postcard views published by Stewart & Woolf, London E.C. of the esplanade. We are standing upon the stone slip to the beach whilst two slipways associated with the yacht club are beyond. The weather looks to be somewhat inclement and the pier is not looking too inviting for a stroll. Well, there's nothing for it - its back to the bar to keep warm! Another from the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

Pier & Esplanade - Penarth

Pier & Esplanade - Penarth - The second postcard view published by Stewart & Woolf, London E.C. of the esplanade taken closer to the pier. It was posted in October 1905. Two smartly dressed lads realise that a photographer is at work and take the opportunity to have their images captured for posterity. A large canvas advertisement attached to the pier handrail proclaims that the 'Express' is the best newspaper whilst the requisites of the 'Empire' remain a mystery. [001]

Penarth Beach c.1905
Penarth Beach c.1905

Penarth Beach - c.1905 - A postcard view from the same period as the above postcards. The Rock Villa and Balcony Villa were built in the 1860 around the time of the completion of the Penarth Dock and were demolished 100 years later - about the same time as the dock was being defiled. Alongside are the seawater baths with the fine Esplanade Hotel beyond. Pieces of our social history mostly lost forever but held in the Penarth Dock Collection plus a colourised version. [001]
