Penarth Church - A postcard sent from Penarth to a Mr Thomas at Dowlais in June 1909. It features St. Augustine's church with its fine four-square tower. The great bell was brought down from the tower and sent for repair during 1935. The lower image has been colourised . [001]

The Bell Catalogue of John Taylor & Co. (successors to the ancient firm of Watts, Eayre & Arnold) published in 1894 has a list of 'peals of bells cast since 1858' and the reference : - 'Penarth, the gift of Baroness Windsor - 6 bells weighing 14 cwt.' [483]

St. Augustine's Church - Penarth - Designed by William Butterfield (1814 - 1900) and built under the patronage of Baroness Windsor to house the growing population of Penarth sinners as it grew exponentially! The old church tower had served mariners and the good folk of the hamlet of Penarth equally for centuries. Now, as the Penarth Dock opened for business in 1865 the new church opened its doors. Cadw describe the church interior as 'brilliantly polychromatic' in shades of ochre, pink, red, cream and black; exterior: local grey rock-faced limestone, with Bath stone dressings and shafts of pink Radyr stone 'very sparingly used'.
