Penarth from the Head
Penarth from the Head

Penarth from the Head - A Judges photograph with the stamped message on the reverse 'Reference Set - Return to Judges Ltd., Hastings'. Since it forms part of the Penarth Dock Collection and came by it legitimately I don't feel obliged to do so thank you! The view looks over the beach and esplanade of Penarth. The extent of the Severn Sea which changes to the Bristol Channel at the headland distant can be seen. The Holms islands are shrouded in mist but the chimney of the Penarth Cement Works may be seen clearly. The lower image has been colourised. [001]

The Penarth Dock and Headland

The Penarth Dock and Headland - An early aerial view, which I estimate from the coal tip infrastructure, as after 1905 since nos. 19 and 20 are in place. The ferro-concrete staging to tips 3 & 4 was added 1913 and is in place. The railways to nos. 1 & 2 tips in the basin are still in place so could be 1915 but prior to the 1920's when many changes took place as the GWR took over the operation from the Taff Vale Railway Company.

On the headland is the distinctive tower of the 1865 St. Augustines church and the TVR Dock Hotel is clear. In the Severn sea beyond is the mud-bank named 'Cefn y Wrâch' which clearly defines the safe approach to both Penarth and Cardiff Docks between it and the Penarth Dock beach under the Penarth Head. The Pier from Penarth Head - c. 1970

The Pier from Penarth Head - c. 1970 - As the Bristol or Cardiff Queen heads off from the pier toward Ilfracombe on a bright day. The park on the headland was a favourite spot for brother-in-law Don and myself to sit a watch over the Holms and peer down-channel toward the Devon coast. [001]
