'Lady Cory-Wright ' - A G. Wehrley & Co. photo of the 'Lady Cory-Wright', 2,516 tons, which was launched at the S. P. Austin & Son, Ltd. shipyard on Teeside near Sunderland in 1906. She was lost to her owners Cory Colliers, Ltd. of London in 1918 having been requisitioned by the Royal Navy at the onset of WWI and en route to Malta loaded with a cargo of torpedoes, mines and depth charges. She was intercepted by the German submarine UC-17 and torpedoed. A massive explosion followed which took the lives of the entire crew of 40 souls all except one rather lucky individual. [158] [214]
Verification of the origin of the photograph came from its description at an auction:- 'Scarce original real photo postcard - Cory cargo steamer 'Lady Cory-Wright' - glossy sepia photo, postally unused card by Wehrley of Penarth.'
