'Penarth Dock - with Best Wishes ' - An interesting study captured by the camera and skill of George Wehrley illustrating the port of Penarth close to the zenith of coal exports c.1910. Three ships are moored abreast at the northern quay with another being loaded with coal at number 6 tip, whilst the bow of another ship is hemmed against number 7 tip at the left side of the image. It illustrates the limitation of the fixed tips at Penarth as designed by John Hawkshaw in the 1860's for 1860's ships; I don't believe he ever envisaged the day when ships would be as long as these and with multiple hatches. An hydraulic accumulator may be seen in the right foreground behind the coal wagons. The lower image has been colourised. [001] image - G. Wehrley & Co., 97 Glebe Street, Penarth, S. Wales. [395]

Penarth Pontoon, Slipway & Shiprepairing Co. Ltd. formerly the Penarth Shipbuilding and Ship Repairing Co. Ltd.

Interestingly for me, the area behind the ships is the best view so far seen of the facilities of the Penarth Pontoon, Slipway & Shiprepairing Co. Ltd. formerly the Penarth Shipbuilding and Ship Repairing Co. Ltd.

Over the other side of the river Ely estuary is Grange Point upon which we see snow, oil storage tanks and the northern entrance building of the subway. Another piece of history from the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] image - G. Wehrley & Co., 97 Glebe Street, Penarth, S. Wales. [395]

I always like to establish where the camera is positioned (usually not too far from the pub in my experience!). So I would say that George and his camera were just below the old lime kiln nearby the footpath to the dock down from Dock Road. [010] [398]
