Volume Nine - Pre-Victorian to the present day - even more aspects - The Custom House and Dock Offices . . .

Harry indicated that the single storey building adjacent to the Custom House was used for crew sign-on during wet days. It would normally have been a function undertaken at the adjacent Board of Trade Mercantile Marine Offices. The ship owner's representative, usually the captain of the vessel, undertook the signing-on process but discharge at the end of the voyage would have been rubber stamped by Officers of the Board of Trade.

1976 - A portion of an image focusing upon the single storey building adjacent to the Custom House which Harry indicated was used to sign-on crews on wet-days ; must have been used almost every day then? [381]

1950's - Penarth - Entrance to Docks - 'Above the quay is the old Customs House. The docks which cover 26 acres were opened in 1865.'
