The 23rd of October 1952 according to the man who sold me this photograph via a well known auction website. A passenger train is en-route to Dingle Road, Penarth Town, and perhaps onto Barry via Lower Penarth, Lavernock and Sully. The engine is apparently a 0-6-2T workhorse bearing the British Railways logo. Maybe my father was the guard! Our family had moved to Dinas Powis earlier that same year from Splott and Julie, my wife, would have heard the efforts of the engine as it hauled its load up the steep incline up to Penarth Town. Note the lovely white smoke and steam - you only get that from burning good old Welsh steam coal!

The engine is just passing over the remains of a bridge which was the former entrance to the Penarth Dock prior to the 1883 extension works after which a new underpass tunnel entrance was built adjacent to the entrance to Cogan Station running parallel to the Windsor Road and then curling underneath.

To the right of the upper image, the 1880's chimney of the Penarth Brick Works may be seen to the rear of the Station Hotel which is situated at the junction of Pill Street and Windsor Road. Just one car in view and the front of a commercial vehicle entering from St Andrews Road. Oh, those were the days! [000] [001]
