Luggage labels TVR and GWR to Penarth Dock

The days when ladies and gentlemen passengers had to lug their own luggage onto the train, place in onto an overhead luggage rack and reverse the operation at their destination is a modern day invention of the railway companies. In past times monied travelers tipped a porter to ensure that their suitcases and trunks were loaded into the guards van of the correct train and readied by the guard in time for off-loading and returning to the passenger at the appropriate station by the local porters. The gentry and their luggage most often traveled in separate classes! These labels were issued by the railway company gratis at the point of departure in the hope that the passenger and his luggage were happliy reunited at their destination. I wonder how many times it all went wrong? [000] [001]
