Penarth Dock, South Wales - 150 years - the heritage and legacy
Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .

Volume Nine - Pre-Victorian to the present day - even more aspects - The Railway Infrastructure of Penarth Dock and Ely Tidal Harbour   . . .

A photograph I purchased for the Penarth Dock Collection which has the hand-written inscription on the rear 'Penarth Harbour Loco 11/7/59' and is accredited to G. H. Platt. I have no other information about the occasion or the 0-4-0 ST loco. I am unable to positively identify the engine in the photo but it was of a type built by Messrs. Peckett & Sons, of the Atlas Locomotive Works, Bristol. This is probably a type M5 saddle tank engine number 1903 purchased by the South Wales Public Wharf & Transit Company of the Ely Tidal Harbour, Penarth in 1936. The engine described has been restored and is currently at the Chatham Historic Dockyard Railway. They add 'It is believed the loco was originally called "Merlin", and then later "Little Lady", she currently carries no name.' [000] [001]

There is a YouTube video of the engine << click here>> which shows the Peckett loco in grey livery together with the 0-4-0 ST 'Ajax' in green livery built by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns Ltd. in 1941.
