Penarth Dock, South Wales - 150 years - the heritage and legacy
Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .

Cardiff - Penarth train : Pannier 6435 alongside Penarth Road with Llandough Sidings and Signal Box. The photograph was taken by John Wiltshire [432] in September 1960. The mix of disused coal trucks and goods wagons rotting away in the sidings await Dr. Beeching and the oxyacetylene cutting torches of Dai Woodham at Barry Dock. The photo was posted by Peter Brabham on Flickr. [381] Distant left is the Llandough signal box, closed in November 1966, which linked Dobson's Llandough brick works with the main-line. The Ely River Bridge follows the arc around the meanderings of the river and finally states I'm going to cross you now on my way to Grangetown!

The Llandough coal sidings for Penarth Dock; adjacent to the dock

An image taken by Alfred Hugh Fisher in 1909 annotated - 'The Llandough coal sidings for Penarth Dock; adjacent to the dock' - 'Showing railway lines in the foreground. Hills can be seen in the distance.' - A digital image held at the University of Cambridge under their 'Apollo' collection. [189] [190]

The record consists of eight images featured previously back in Volume 2 Chapter 10: The Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) Photograph Collection is held at the Cambridge University Library and includes a series of photographs taken by Alfred Hugh Fisher (1865-1945) during a visit to Penarth Dock in 1909. He was born in London, studied art and became a renowned engraver, etcher and illustrator. The Colonial Office Visual Instruction Committee gave him the job of traveling the British Empire during 1907-09 to make a photographic record. These photographs were subsequently preserved by the Royal Commonwealth Society.

1920's GWR Penarth Dock and Harbour Track Layout
A section of the mid-1920's GWR Penarth Dock and Harbour Track Layout plan found at the Wiltshire and Swindon Archives. This shows the extent of the sidings and the location of the signal boxes controlling shunting movements in and out of the sidings complex. Penarth Road is clear as is the girder bridge of the River Ely Crossing as the line wends it way on toward Grangetown and Cardiff. [252]

1920's GWR Penarth Dock and Harbour Track Layout Shunting operations - I am not sure of the location but the photograph illustrates coupling and un-coupling of coal trucks which was necessary at Llandough sidings to sort the coal for the appropriate tip and again prior to the tipping operation, only then to reconnect the empties for return to the collieries. A somewhat tiresome and extremely dangerous manual task. [000] [002]
