'Newbridge' at Cardiff Docks - c.1850. Whilst I accept that is not part of the Penarth Dock story it is apparently one of the earliest railway photographs! It is a locomotive by Hicks & Co. of Bolton built in 1846. Another postcard from the TVR 150 project - 1836 - 1986 and a part of our heritage held in the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]
D. S. M. Barrie writes of the locomotives of the TVR: 'The first engines for working the traffic on the opening in 1840 were six-wheelers by Sharp Bros., who supplied four engines in 1840-1841, and Hawthorn's at least three (possibly more) in the latter year. Messrs. G. and J. Rennie furnished the next engine in 1842, . . Further engines were supplied by different manufacturers in the next few years, and some of them were of the 0-6-0 goods type; all the early T.V. locomotives carried names of local association, and by 1852 there were twenty-six engines in service.'
