TVR 4-4-2-T engines of 1888

The Vulcan Foundry supplied steam engines to the Taff Vale Railway Company. In 1888 they built TVR numbers 170 - 172 which were unusually configured as 4-4-2T engines. Number 172 is listed as being based at the Penarth Dock engine shed at the re-grouping; the TVR's death and transition to the GWR in 1922.

Below is a drawing in side elevation and plan which has sectional views at axle height and probably at the centre line of the boiler.

The Vulcan Foundry was founded in 1830 by Robert Stephenson in collaboration with Charles Tayleur, a Liverpool engineer and owner of the Bank Quay foundry in Warrington. Later, a second factory was built in Lancashire at Newton-le-Willows. Many thanks to Enuii for the historical information and images. [540]
