Volume Nine - Pre-Victorian to the present day - even more aspects - The Introduction of 20 ton Coal Wagons - 1923   . . .

A 20-ton coal wagon belonging to the GLM Company of Cardiff with 'Empty to Aberdare GWR' on the traverser in June 1947 at the Queen Alexandra Dock, Cardiff. The photograph is from a series of three volumes of the history of Cardiff Docks by John Hutton. [475]

The traverser moves to the coal tip infeed, one truck in, one truck waiting. This is tip number 8 built in 1931 by the Hydraulic Engineering Company Limited of Chester which was formed in 1869. [475]

A tipping operation. Note the hinged end panel of the trucks which is also at the opposite end thus negating time lost at the sidings in the orientation of coal trucks prior to tipping operations. [475]
