1906 - Presents to Seamen - Distribution at Penarth Dock - The annual Christmas distribution of gifts to seamen in connection with the Penarth Seamen's Mission took place on Friday evening. Mr. A. Beasley, general manager of the Taff Vale Railway, has for a number of years taken great interest in the work of the mission, and has annually given prizes to the mission choir. These, which took the form of books, along with gifts to the sailors in the shape of articles of comfort, &c., were distributed by Mrs. Du Sautoy.
It was originally intended that Mrs. Beasley should present both prizes and gifts, and that Mr. Beasley should preside, but, unfortunately, neither was able to be present. The Rev. H. E. H. Coombes, who has charge of the mission steamer Eirene and the missions at Penarth and Barry, presided, and with his assistant, Mr. G. Lockyer, conducted the evening's proceedings. Referring to the absence of Mr. Beasley, Mr. Coombes said they owed a very great deal to him personally and also to the Taff Vale Railway Company.
The Taff Vale Railway Company, he said, provided them with the electric light in the mission-room free of charge. They had also a very valuable site on the dock from the company at a peppercorn rent, and not only that, but he believed that the company when the mission was built, some 30 years ago, gave a, considerable sum towards the building fund. He was sure it would be the pleasure of everyone present that he should convey to Mr. and Mrs. Beasley their good wishes for the New Year. (Applause.)
A fine Christmas tree, the gift of Mrs. Jenner, of Wenvoe Castle, was brilliantly lighted upon the stage, and underneath were displayed the gifts and prizes. The room was decorated with Japanese lanterns. There are not many vessels in the dock at present, but over 50 sailors were present to receive gifts. Tea and cake were also distributed to them in the course of the night, as well as tobacco and Christmas cards. During the evening a programme of vocal and instrumental music was performed. - Evening Express [135] [361] 29th December 1906. |
