The Rev. John Ashley - founder of the Bristol Channel Missions to Seamen. [1389]

John Ashley was born in Jamaica in December 1800 but settled in the suburbs around Bristol and the West Country from the 1830's onwards.

The Rev. John Ashley married Catherine Ward in August 1824, but she died in 1834. He then married Elizabeth Treadwell at Marylebone during September 1868.

The above photographs were much faded when a lady brought them to the Missions to Seamen at Mission House, Prince Street, Bristol 1, who were holding a fundraising sale during early December 1946. The lady was apparently the niece of Dr. Ashley and the photographs were enhanced by a gentleman associated with the Mission. [1389]
