Some Reports of the loss of the Mission Steamship 'Eirene' built at the Penarth Ship Building and Shiprepairing Company and launched in May 1898 : -

THE MISSIONS TO SEAMEN. USEFUL WORK IN THE BRISTOL CHANNEL. War coloured not only the report of the Missions to Seamen, but the entire proceedings at the annual meeting of the Mission, held on Monday last at the Church House, Westminster. The annual report stated that the mission steamer Eirene in the Bristol Channel had been taken over by the War Office, and used as an examining ship on patrol duty in her old waters. She had been sunk after a collision with a Norwegian steamer off Clevedon. Happily there had been no loss of life, and the Government would, it was believed, in due time, compensate the Mission. The yacht Criselda had been sent round from Sheerness to replace temporarily the lost Eirene. In the Bristol Channel and other stations the numbers of seamen had fallen off because the ships usually trading to them had been largely taken up by the Admiralty, and the men were serving the country aboard warships, transports. mine-sweeping trawlers, etc., which did not happen to use these particular ports. - Barry Dock News [140] [361] 7th May 1915.
