Penarth Dock, South Wales - 150 years - the heritage and legacy

Volume Nine - Pre-Victorian to the present day - even more aspects - More Moments Captured in Time . . .

Penarth Pier.
◊ Penarth Pier - An antique, hand-coloured, postcard view of the Esplanade Hotel and the fine Sea-water Public Baths from the Pier. Note the lovely ironwork of the balustrade and handrail which remains in place and in good condition even today. The supporting iron pillars and cross-bracing, however, has suffered corrosion and even impact from vessels over the years and in places are encased in concrete to assure safe support of the deck above. Note the large houses of the ship and coal owners (the 'Penarth millionaires') on the hillside above Alexandra Park. Another of the fine postcard and photographic Moments Captured in Time from the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] [20180826]

c.1903 - Penarth, Promenade and Pier.

◊ Penarth, Promenade and Pier - A postcard posted at Penarth in April 1903 to an address in South Malvern shows the slipway at the Yacht Club complete with children playing near the water. At the pier, a paddle steamer approaches. At that date there was at least twelve paddle steamers in service with P & A Campbell ; most probably the vessel is the p.s. 'Glen Rosa' or possibly p.s. 'Cambria' given its single funnel, forward mast and curvature of the paddle box enclosure.
