Figure 8 Railway, Barry Island

◊ Figure 8 Railway, Barry Island - The Barry Island figure of eight roller coaster was first opened in 1912 and closed in 1939 at the outbreak of WWII. The fair was owned and operated by White Brothers during the 1920's. Another of the fine postcard and photographic views of Moments Captured in Time from the Penarth Dock Collection. Barry - Gem of the Welsh Coast

◊ Barry - Gem of the Welsh Coast - A GWR poster advertising the resort which had progressively opened up to the working classes during the summer months. Special train services carried holiday-makers from the coal mining valleys etc. for day trips and longer breaks. Following the 1922 consolidation of the numerous South Wales railway companies under the ownership and control of the Great Western Railway, they set about promoting their assets in order to increase passenger numbers and thus turnover and profit. This advertisement is a fine example of railway commercialism and the progressive change from freight to passenger traffic. Another fine postcard view and a Moment Captured in Time from the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] [005] [20180905]

1956 - Barry Island - Guinness Festival Clock
◊ 1956 - Barry Island - Guinness Festival Clock - A family photograph with yours truly, complete with spade and silly hat, seated between Mum and Dad, with brother Peter, during the summer of 1956. The visiting Guinness clock was first exhibited at Battersea in 1951 and copies were made which toured the country providing an advertising display every quarter of an hour to enthralled crowds. Another of the fine postcard and photographic views of Moments Captured in Time from the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] [20180905]
