Barry Docks.

◊ Barry Docks - A Valentine's Series postcard view of the vast No.1 Dock at Barry. Originally it was conceived that the dock would have an area of water of 40 acres but during construction a previously unknown geological fault put a large spanner in the works. The dock walls required a firm sub-soil on which foundations could be laid but which could not be found on the seaward side of the dock. By the time that suitable ground conditions were found, the expanse of water had increased by 33 acres making the final total 73 acres ; at that date it was one of the largest enclosed docks in the World and certainly the largest man-made dock in Europe. Another Moment Captured in Time from the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] [20181003]

Barry Docks.

◊ Barry Docks - A rather badly hand-coloured postcard view of No. 1 Dock postdated September 1906. In the centre distance is the 'Mole' ; effectively a peninsular extending into the dock from the western end. The feature was turned to advantage as a result of the increased width of the dock forced upon the contractors during construction due to the geological fault. The advantage was that it provided additional wharfage which was soon to be utilised most efficiently for handling coal and later, oil. Water was permitted to flood the dock during June 1889 and the opening ceremony was performed one month later. Another Moment Captured in Time held for all to see within the Penarth Dock Collection. The eastern end of Barry Island as seen across the waters of the Barry Sound.

◊ Turning the clock back. A view of the eastern end of Barry Island as seen across the waters of the former Barry Sound. This photograph was taken from a position on the mainland and can be dated prior to 1884. Barry Sound subsequently became the main body of water forming number 1 dock. This heritage photograph is borrowed with many thanks from a very informative volume entitled 'Barry - The Centenary Book'. The photographic rights have been assigned to G. Beautte Coll.
