Penarth Dock, South Wales - 150 years - the heritage and legacy
Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .

Volume Nine - Pre-Victorian to the present day - even more aspects - More Moments Captured in Time . . .

Cardiff Docks.

◊ Cardiff Docks - A 'National Series' postcard complete with glitter highlights. However, the glitter does not reproduce too well so the image has been edited accordingly. The postcard is un-posted so the date is somewhat uncertain. I suggest that it is a photograph of the Alexandra Dock given the evidence of distant Lewis Hunter 23 ton hydraulic coaling cranes. The dock which was opened by King Edward VII during July 1907, hence it is another worthy Moment Captured in Time from the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] [20181015]

The West Dock, Cardiff.

◊ The West Dock, Cardiff - We are actually inside the Bute West Dock Basin looking toward the main dock. The West Dock complex was built by main contractor Daniel Storm for Lord Bute and it opened with the passing of the first ship 'Manulus' during October 1839. [614] The postcard is post-dated November 1909 to Miss. W. Badham of Chester House, Colwall near Malvern. The red brick church, which backs onto Bute Crescent, is indicated on the old OS maps but its name and denomination is not specified. It is, of course, the Mission's to Seamen Church. This WHS postcard is a lovely Moment Captured in Time and is held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] [20181015]

Exchange from Bute Docks, Cardiff.

◊ Exchange from Bute Docks, Cardiff - A somewhat inaccurate title since the photograph is a view toward the Bute West Dock entrance lock with the merchant's exchange to the left but it is taken from the east side of the entrance channel. The paddle vessels in steam are tugs awaiting the arrival or departure of the next ship. Similarly, a number of pilot boats in sail await their next job nearby the entrance to the graving docks on the opposite bank. A Valentine's Series postcard capturing the working day and a Moment Captured in Time and a postcard held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] [20181015]
