• October 1898 - Mercantile Marine - A Popular Appointment - The important appointment of chief inspector and superintendent of the outdoor staff of the Mercantile Marine Police for Cardiff, Penarth, and Barry, rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr Evans after 30 years service, has just been accepted by Inspector Thomas Williams. The new superintendent has been signally honoured by the Board of Trade, for it is a rare proceeding for that department to promote officers who have served many years in one district to such a responsible position in it. Mr Williams has put in 25 years' efficient service and is a exception to the rule that a man's merits are un-appreciated in his own town. Before he joined the service Mr Williams was one of the two engineers at the fire brigade station. For the last six years he has been inspector in charge at Penarth. He is well-known and an active Forester.' - South Wales Echo [163] [361] 11th October 1898.

• 1901 - Penarth - Lascar Transfer Office - 'We are officially informed that Lord George Hamilton has appointed Mr C. Stuart Hall, superintendent of the Mercantile Marine Office, Penarth, superintendent for the transfer of Lascars at that port. It is to be noted that the transfer of Lascars under the Merchant shipping Act, 1894, is illegal without his certificate, and that all agreements under his certificate, and that all agreements under which Lascars or natives of India are brought to the United Kingdom will be strictly enforced.' - Barry Dock News [140] [361] 6th September 1901.
