The Sailor's Home, Cardiff.
The Sailor's Home, Cardiff.

The Sailor's Home, Cardiff - The foundation stone of the sailor's home in Stuart Street was laid during July 1853 the building cost being met by the Marquis of Bute. Within it contained a reading room, library, skittle alley and accommodation of 150 visiting seamen. The building was dedicated to the Marchioness of Bute, Sophia. I have good reason to suspect that many seamen arriving at Penarth Dock journeyed to Cardiff and stayed a while at the home in order to recuperate prior to their next signing-on. This postcard photograph was produced by Martin J. Ridley. Another heritage maritime postcard record held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] [M.J.R.B.7729]
