The three masted British barquentine 'Madras' sailed from Penarth Roads for Amboyna, China on the 8th March 1891 with a cargo of coal, and went missing. She was not heard of since and was presumed lost with 15 crew. She was built at Aberaeron by David Jones being of 668 net registered tons.

A barquentine (barkentine) is a vessel with at least three masts, all of them fore-and-aft rigged, except for the foremost one, which is square rigged. [214]
