Volume Eleven - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - some more aspects - The Shipbreakers of Penarth . . .
F. E. Aitken, Esq. Dear Sir, Referring to interview we have pleasure of having you this week, in regard to Steamers for demolition, we now write you on the matter, as promised. There are Vessels frequently coming onto the market for this purpose either as old liners, cargo steamers or disabled vessels, and when you are ready to operate we would be able to put before you suitable tonnage. In fact we have in view at the moment a boat which will certainly be for sale in the course of the next few months, an Atlantic Cargo liner which is being replaced by a new Boat. It may interest you to know the present breaking up value of Steamers. On referring to our Books we find that two iron cargo steamers about 2200 tons gross register have recently been sold at £1 - 18 - 9d. and £1 - 16 - 4d. per gross ton, another Boat somewhat larger and having passenger accommodation brought about £2 per ton gross register. Of course you will understand that prices depend upon the intrinsic value of each individual boat as well as the amount of passenger fittings etc. |
