Discharging Pulp at Penarth Dock : from s.s. 'Progress'.

The undermentioned, amongst other large light steamers have been bunkered at Penarth Dock : -

By means of powerful centrifugal pumps the depth of water in the Dock and Basin is maintained at any height required.

The Dock gates are opened and closed by hydraulic power, and hydraulic capstans re available at the outer and inner gates to assist vessels passing in and out. The Dock is exceptionally handy and convenient for moving vessels, and the cost of hauling is very low as compared with the other Docks in the Channel.

Storage Sidings, to hold Coal awaiting shipment, have been provided in convenient proximity to the Dock, and are capable of holding thousands of wagons.

Through Railway Rates for ship's stores, machinery, and general merchandise, are in operation between Penarth Dock and all parts of the United Kingdom, which rates are, in all cases, the same as from the Docks at Cardiff. Railway wagons are loaded and discharged on sidings alongside the vessels, so that there is no break of bulk between the ship's side and the stations of origin or destination.
