1991 - The A4232 road viaduct east of Llandough. The gasometer at Grangetown gas works is nearing the end of its life by the late 90's and LPG with horizontally orientated cylindrical storage tanks are beginning to predominate the site. I recall travelling by train from Cardiff General to Dinas Powis at night in the 1950's when the producer, or town, gas was manufactured at the coking plant adjacent to the railway. The red hot ashes from the process were pushed out of the large arched apertures of the red-brick coking ovens and the air was tinged with an extremely strong sulphurous odour. Time to pull up the leather strap to close the window and to breath again!
