June 1949 - Barry Railway B1 tank 0-6-2T approaching the western portal of Cogan tunnel. The photograph was featured within an article named 'Four Miles from Cardiff General' published within British Railways Illustrated Magazine in which Bryan Wilson states: 'A proper Barry Railway engine, No.42, our 240, of Barry class B1, climbs up to Cogan tunnel with a freight. The stonework seen through the bridge arch marks the entrance to the tunnel. The first van in the train is of LNW origin,. No. 240 was one of six of the class that amassed more than a million miles and that took some doing on a railway the size of the Barry. She lasted just nine more months, being condemned in March 1951.' - Photograph J. C. Flemmons. The Transport Treasury. [1039] [1040]
