Volume Eleven - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - some more aspects - Patent Applications by George Taylor, of Penarth, 1883 . . .

This receiver is adapted to be raised in the staith in the same way as the tipping cradle or platform now is, and it is so constructed and arranged as to be capable of being moved horizontally in the staith or on adjustable ways extending towards the vessel, whereby a portion or the whole of the receiver may be projected outwards beyond the staith and over the conveyor or shoot by which the coal is transferred from the staith to the vessel.

The bottom of the receiver may be constructed of hinged flaps or sections adapted to be self opening when unsupported in order to discharge the contents of the receiver onto the conveyor or shoot. In addition to or in lieu of the self opening bottom the receiver maybe provided with gear for tipping it.

SPECIFICATION in pursuance of the conditions of the Letters Patent filed by the said George Taylor in the Patent Office on the 15th March 1884.

GEORGE TAYLOR of Penarth in the County of Glamorgan "IMPROVEMENTS IN APPARATUS FOR TRANSFERRING COAL FROM RAILWAY WAGGONS TO VESSELS."

In order to diminish the weight to be raised in the staith I provide receivers within. the staith for the purpose of receiving the coal from railway waggons discharged by any convenient method outside the staith instead of running the waggon into the staith and hoisting it.

The receivers are adapted to be raised in the staith in the same way as the tipping platform now is and is also capable of being moved horizontally on adjustable ways in the staith and extending beyond the staith whereby it may be projected outwards and over a shoot into which the coal is discharged from the receivers for conveyance to the vessel.
