At the auction last week there was a good attendance of foreign buyers, the sale being open to British, Allied, and neutral purchasers, and the company was honoured by the presence of distinguished officers of the United States Navy. The steamer was offered as she then lay at Cardiff in her damaged state. Bidding commenced at £10,000, [equivalent to c.£528k in 2020] and after very keen competition she was secured for £45,000 [equivalent to c.£2.4m in 2020] by the Company, acting on behalf of foreign buyers. Considering the vessel's condition, the price realised is an excellent one. - The Nautical Gazette [977] [499] Oct.-Dec. 1919.

1919 - Fire aboard s.s. 'Lynton' in Penarth Dock - The s.s. 'Lynton' of the Port London entered Penarth Dock Basin in ballast at 3 p.m. on 3rd November 1919, and at 4:30 p.m. fire was discovered in the engine-room store-room. Previously, the donkeyman had been in the engine-room with a deck lamp, and had left it in the store-room to go on deck, and it is supposed that the lamp upset and caused the fire, but no proof was obtainable. The vessel was not seriously damaged.' [1008] [499]

1872 - 'The John Bryce was one of the vessels damaged by the tidal wave at Pabellon de Pica in May, 1877, losing her jibboom and foretop mast besides having bulwarks smashed and other injuries done. In December, 1872, while at Penarth, loading for Callao, she was carried from her moorings in a heavy gale and did damage to the extent of $15,000 to four steamers and three foreign barks besides being herself injured to quite an extent.' - [1017] [499]
