Volume Twelve - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - further aspects - Defence of the Realm - Penarth Head Fort and Coastal Battery . . . 1901 - Cardiff's Defences - Battery to be Erected on Penarth Head - At to-day's monthly meeting of the Cardiff Chamber of Commerce, Mr. H. W. Wood-Davey, who presided, stated as a matter of interest to those present what the Government were doing for the protection of the Bristol Channel ports in time of war. The new fort on Barry Island was complete, and was now waiting for its armament of two 6-in. quick-firing guns, which were expected at any time. The guns had not yet been erected at the Lavernock Battery, but were at the station, and would be put up shortly. The War Office had sanctioned a new fort for Penarth Head, on which two 6-inch quick-firing guns would be erected. A new battery was also about to be constructed at Portishead, and this would also be armed with two guns. The Brean Down guns, he understood, would be dismantled as being of no further use. The guns on the Holmes were quite obsolete, and, owing to the water difficulty, it was not proposed to do anything further there. - Evening Express [135] [361] 16th January 1901. 1903 - Six-Inch Guns at Penarth - The battery which is being built at Penarth Head is nearing completion. Two 6-inch guns have arrived, and will be mounted in the course of a few days. Sixteen artillery-men have arrived to carry out the work, and they will be under the command of Lieutenant Fellowes, R.A., and Master-gunner Boswell. - Evening Express [135] [361] 9th July 1903.
