Barry Pleasure Steamers - c.1908 - A colourised postcard view of p.s. 'Gwalia' moored at the Barry Harbour landing stage on a busy day. 'Gwalia' was constructed as 'Lady Moyra' for the Furness Railway Company during 1905 at the yard of John Brown & Company on Clydebank which was founded back in 1851. She was purchased by the Barry Railway Company as part of the 'Red Funnel Fleet' and renamed 'Gwalia' ; later she was converted for use as a minesweeper in WWI. After the war and following the demise of the 'Barry Pleasure Steamers' operation during 1911, she became part of the 'Yellow Funnel Fleet' of the William H. Tucker family of Cardiff. This 'fleet' of two vessels lasted for about three seasons prior to going into bankruptcy. In 1922, P & A Campbell bought her at auction and in 1933 she was renamed 'Brighton Queen' and set her to work on the south coast of England. She was sadly lost at Dunkirk in 1940 during the evacuation of troops whilst on her second trip of the mission. Another heritage postcard held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]
