1920's - No. 88 leaves Dinas Powis with a Cardiff to Barry Island train in the 1920's formed of ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire 4 wheelers.

The photograph is borrowed from an excellent book 'Barry, It's Railway and Port' by John Hodge. Credit is given to J. Pitt and the John Hodge Collection. John used to live alongside the Cadoxton sidings and has recorded much of the railway and dock activity over an extended period in this fine book. [1263]

c.1935-38 - The Holiday Haunts Express - en route to Barry Island Old Oak Common Castle 5045, whose name was changed from Bridgewater Castle to Earl of Dudley in September 1937, heads a Holiday Haunts Express past the Murch Road Bridge at Dinas Powis. As the negative has no date, it is not possible to give the exact engine name.

A common sight in the summer months in the 1950's and whenever I was in the vicinity I would jump up and stick my head over the bridge parapet just to get a face full of that warm sulphurous steam and all those smuts of soot - just lovely until I got home that is! The engine is running on Welsh steam coal - not a hint of black smoke in sight!

The photograph is credited to Gerald Hubback of Barry. The lower image has been colourised for effect. Another fine photograph from the book 'Barry, It's Railway and Port' by John Hodge. [1263]
