c.1900 - Penarth Beach - A postcard from 'The Camera Series' published by the Western Mail, Cardiff. A ha'penny postage stamp would suffice (1/480th of £1.0s.0d. = approx. 0,2p in new pence!) in those days! The upper image has been colourised for effect. [000] [002]

Penarth Beach.

Penarth Beach - Prior to the pier construction which opened in 1898. The Clubhouse is a Grade II listed building and was built originally for the Penarth Boat Club founded 1880 which became the Penarth Yacht Club in 1895. The clubhouse was built progressively in the 1880's and has been in use ever since ; situated at the bottom of the hill with its flagpole opposite and the long slipway into the sea which ensured that boats could be launched at most states of the tide. Also note the mobile bathing huts, known as 'bathing machines' and in the distant sailing vessels awaiting to enter the docks at Cardiff and Penarth. In the distance is the East Moors Steelworks, otherwise known as 'Dowlais-by-the Sea,' which was built for the Dowlais Iron Company of Merthyr Tydfil and which was opened during February 1891 by Lord Bute. Hence, this photograph approximately can be dated prior to the mid-1890's and after the mid-1880's. [000] [002]

Early 1900's - Penarth Beach & Pier.
Early 1900's - Penarth Beach & Pier - A White Funnel Fleet paddle steamer is departing the pier, probably for Weston-super-Mare, on a lovely clear day. The line of seaweed along the beach suggests that a recent storm has now abated. Couples stroll arm-in-arm, children paddle in the sea, whilst others just sit on the esplanade and watch the world go by! [043]
