Cardiff Castle - A Happy New Year.

A Happy New Year - This Tuck's 'Carte Postale' states on the reverse that 'Cardiff Castle is believed to have been founded in 1080 by Jestyn ab Gwrgan, and completed by Robert Fitzhamon in 1110. In the Black Tower the eldest son of William the Conqueror was confined for 26 years. Of the old fortress, which is now in the possession of the Marquis of Bute, little but the octagonal keep is left.' Another undated postcard held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

The Canal - Castle and Law Courts, Cardiff.
The Canal - Castle and Law Courts, Cardiff - A 'Strand Series' postcard view dating c.1946 i.e. just after the termination of WWII when travel and basic human freedom was reinstated within the community. [001]

Cardiff Castle Walls, Cardiff.
Cardiff Castle Walls, Cardiff - Another view from the opposite direction to that above, of the exterior of the castle, looking back toward the tower of Saint John the Baptist Church situated at the end of St. John Street. Some boys are boating on the former moat which long before this was 're-purposed' for the transportation needs of the iron and coal trades. An unposted card held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

'A circa 1897 snow scene alongsde the walls of Cardiff Castle, where the (Glamorganshire) canal ran in the former moat just below North Road Lock.
A photograph taken c.1897 from a similar location as the postcard view above. This photograph is borrowed from the excellent book 'The Glamorganshire and Aberdare Canals' [528] and describes 'A circa 1897 snow scene alongside the walls of Cardiff Castle, where the (Glamorganshire) canal ran in the former moat just below North Road Lock.' (The photograph is credited to S. C. Fox from the ILW Collection.)

Duke Street and Queen Street from the Castle Ramparts, Cardiff.
Duke Street and Queen Street from the Castle Ramparts, Cardiff - A postcard view post-marked August 1959 from Cyncoed. Janet & Olive say 'So sorry to hear about poor "Smoke" - do hope he is improving'. Another piece of social history held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

Cardiff Castle and Duke Street.
Cardiff Castle and Duke Street - A lovely postcard published by Jarrold & Sons Limited of Norwich and post dated 1961 showing the extents of the castle and keep. Sections of the original walls are clearly defined. Distant are the buildings and towers which at this date were the base of the Welsh College of Music and Drama which I attended for my trumpet lessons with Mr. Ivor Bosanko. Another fine heritage record held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]
