Penarth Dock, South Wales - 150 years - the heritage and legacy
Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .
Volume Twelve - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - further aspects - Even More Moments Captured in Time - [vintage photo and postcard album] . . .

Penarth Town Centre.

Penarth Town Centre - the roundabout at the junction of Windsor Road, Stanwell Road, Albert Road, Windsor Terrace and Bradenham Place. The clock was installed in 1987 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Penarth and was manufactured by J. B. Joyce & Company Limited of Whitchurch, Shopshire, who claim to be the oldest clockmaker in the world! A heritage postcard held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

Penarth Beach, Pier and RNLI Station.

An informative handwritten note by an unknown author on the rear of the postcard reads:

This picture is really up to date! It shows the track into the water opposite the RNLI Station and shop with the white railings on either side. The gate at the top aims to keep it clear for the tractor, known as 'Fred' (after Dr. Griffiths) to push the boat on the trailer down to the water. This is the B-Class Atlantic lifeboat which takes 3 crew. We also have the smaller D-Class which takes 2/3 crew. It is amazing how often they get called out. They do not fire the flares anymore -  used to let those awaiting help they were coming. Guess you know all this anyway! Ann Bromley in charge of the shop will receive an award at the Barbican Centre in May. Glad you and Hilary had an enjoyable Christmas together.

Clearly written by someone who is closely affiliated to the RNLI at Penarth. Does anyone know more about the identity of this person? Please get in touch by email. Anne Bromley was presented with a long-service award by the RNLI for 40 years service in October 2016. Another heritage postcard held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

No Fishing!
A press cutting included with the two above postcards which I found on a well known auction website. A typical scene on the end of the pier with a sign clearly stating 'No Fishing' but it seems, as when I visit, that many fishermen and women in the Penarth area can't read! [002]

A 1960's view of the Penarth beach and pier.
A late 1950's or early 1960's view of the Penarth beach and pier with either the paddle steamer 'Cardiff Queen' or 'Bristol Queen' manoeuvring at the pier. Another heritage postcard held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

The Marina, Penarth - Another 1950's or 1960's view of the pier and the pavillion.
The Marina, Penarth - Another 1950's or 1960's view of the pier and the pavilion (I don't recall it ever being referred to as the Marina! - please correct me if you know better!). People just wander over the esplanade roadway without the hazard of the 'little boy racers' and it even seems to pre-date those 'mods and rockers'! A "Sepiatype" postcard published by Valentine and Sons Limited held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]
