1950 - Dinas Powis Station - complete with signal box! In the 1950's there were seats to sit upon whilst you waited for the train to Cardiff. The gardens were kept neat and tidy and there was even a competition for the best garden among the line and Dinas Powis won most years as I recall! The signal box staff were always welcoming to my father and myself and, like the ticket office staff, brewed their tea in chipped and stained enamel jugs with matching mugs and added at least a tablespoon of Fussell's condensed milk to each portion! [condensed milk was attributed to G. Borden in the 1850's and was produced using a vacuum evaporation process to preserve milk] The lower image and enlargement have been colourised. Another heritage postcard held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

Dinas Powis Railway Station Staff.

Dinas Powis Railway Station Staff - This photograph shows the railway station as built back in 1888 when the first passenger trains of the Barry Railway Company ran in December that year. The images above compare the construction of the 'new' and 'old' platforms and station buildings. The new date from the 1930's after the Barry Railway had been incorporated into the GWR in 1921.

The station was, according to Chrystal Tilney in her chapter published within the Glamorgan Historian Vol. 11, probably the last place in the village to cling to the spelling "Dynas Powis" current at the end of the 19th century and the 'y' could apparently still be seen under the black-out paint when all station names were blotted out during WWII.

The Station Master was Mr. Roblin, with porters,  'Billo' Aston and P. Pugsley and the Signalman, Ted. [1369]
